Future Vandy star pitches for USA

While Vanderbilt's Sonny Gray and Jason Esposito are busy playing for the USA Baseball Collegiate Team a future Commodore is busy pitching for the 18U USA National Team.

Lefty Philip J. Pfeifer III has appeared in four games for the U.S. team and currently sports a 3-0 record and 3.14 ERA. Pfeifer has 21 strikeouts, 8 walks and has allowed only 5 unearned runs.

Pfeifer and his Farragut and U.S. National teammate, Georgia commit Nicky Delmonico, will be featured in the hard copy of the Sports Illustrated that comes out Monday evening (dated August 2nd). They will appear in a special article about the best young athletes in the country this year, called "Where Will They Be?"

Pfeifer and his USA teammates traveled on Wednesday to Thunder Bay, Canada, embarking on the 2010 IBAF "AAA" (18U) World Junior Championships from July 23-Aug. 1. Team USA opens their quest for a gold medal at the World Championships Saturday July 24, against Australia at 4 p.m. ET from Port Arthur Stadium.

Pfeifer is considered one of the top pitching prospects in the nation. As a junior at Farragut high school in Knoxville, Pfeifer posted a 16-0 record. In 96 innings pitched he struck out 165 and recorded a stellar 1.23 ERA with only 26 walks. He was selected the Louisville Slugger National Pitcher of the Year, National Junior Player of the Year (Maxpreps.com), 1st team All-American, Tennessee Pitcher of the Year, State Tournament MVP, 1st team All-State, Prepextra Player of the Year, Perfect Game National Showcase, Orlando National Classic Cy Young Award.
