Memphis Redbirds to Get New GM

Ben Weiss

New facilities management firm Global Spectrum to transfer 31-year-old Ben Weiss from UMass arena to lead Triple-A club.

In Thursday's editions, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal reports that Ben Weiss, general manager of the Mullins Center, a multi-purpose arena seating 10,500 on the campus of the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, MA, will be named the new general manager of the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds and AutoZone Park.

Weiss is employed by the newly-named facility managers in Memphis, Global Spectrum, a Comcast subsidiary. For more information on Global Spectrum being hired and Blues City Baseball being fired in Memphis, check out my article from The Cardinal Nation blog, "Memphis emperor has no clothes".

The Commercial-Appeal offered the following:

"It is unclear how long Weiss has managed the Mullins Center, or if he has any experience running a baseball team, which will be a big part of his responsibilities with the Redbirds."

I am happy to help the paper fill in the blanks.

Weiss, 31, has been employed by Comcast subsidiaries since February, 2001 after graduating the previous year from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a BA degree in marketing.

From 2001 through 2004, Weiss was an account manager responsible for group sales at the Wachovia Center/Spectrum in Philadelphia. Global Spectrum moved him to Trenton, New Jersey's Sovereign Bank Arena where he worked in its production department as an event coordinator, and became a senior event manager.

In 2006, Weiss was promoted to assistant general manager at Sovereign Bank Arena, where he worked closely with event promoters. He served in that role for a year, and in August 2007, was assigned the GM role at Mullins Center, the home of the UMass basketball and hockey clubs as well as other events.

Weiss' business profile notes his specialties are "Event Management / Sales".

Lest there be any doubt, Weiss is not being brought in to run a baseball team, per se, but instead "to enhance the customer experience, as well as reduce expenses and maximize revenue," to quote Global Spectrum spokesman Ike Richman in the Commercial-Appeal.

Weiss will replace Dave Chase, Redbirds president/general manager since 2002. Chase has been kept on for 60 days as a consultant to Global Spectrum. Two other senior club executives have been fired while the remaining team employees have been invited to apply to Global Spectrum in hopes of keeping their jobs.

Hopefully, Weiss will be surrounded by a strong management team and that a corporate focus on driving profit as well as running a top-notch baseball operation can co-exist in Memphis.
