Cards Call Up Boggs; Shift Three Others

Mitchell Boggs

The St. Louis Cardinals move four on Friday: Mitchell Boggs to make MLB debut, Mike Parisi to Memphis, Kelvin Jimenez to 15-day DL, Tyler Johnson to 60-day DL.

The St. Louis Cardinals made several roster moves on Friday:

  • Purchased the contract of right handed pitcher Mitchell Boggs from Memphis (Triple-A).

  • Optioned pitcher Mike Parisi to Memphis. This created room on the 25-man active roster for Boggs.

  • Transferred pitcher Tyler Johnson from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. This created space on the 40-man roster for the addition of Boggs.

  • Rescinded the option of pitcher Kelvin Jimenez to Memphis and placed him on the 15-day disabled list due to a bruised right hand, retroactive to May 31. This is the second move of this unusual type this season, as the Cardinals made a similar pair of transactions with Brad Thompson in late April.

Boggs, 24, will become the eighth player to make his Major League debut with the Cardinals this season, matching the San Francisco Giants for most among all teams this season.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Boggs has anchored the Memphis starting rotation this year, going 5-1 with a 3.28 ERA (10th in the Pacific Coast League) in 12 starts.  He has limited the opposition to a .230 BA (.193 vs. righties) and his 1.16 WHIP (walks + hits/innings pitched) ranked 5th in the PCL.  He has allowed just three home runs in 71.1 IP.

Boggs posted a complete game win at Iowa on May 28 and worked 6.0 IP on Monday (June 2) at Alabama in his most recent outing.  He fanned a season-high 10 batters on May 18 vs. Oklahoma.

Boggs was the Cardinals' fifth-round draft selection in 2005 (170th player overall) out of the University of Georgia where he was a member of the 2004 Southeast Conference co-champions.  He went 11-7, 3.84 ERA as the staff ace for Springfield (AA) last season.

Boggs will wear uniform #68 and is expected to join the club in Houston Friday evening.
