Cards Arizona Fall League Notebook: 10/12/13

Starter Sam Gaviglio pitched four innings

The Salt River Rafters dropped their third home game to remain winless at Salt River Fields.

Results from the game played Friday, October 11th.

Peoria 5 at Salt River 3

Single tallies in the eighth and ninth dropped the Rafters (1-3) for the third time in their first four games as they lost 5-3 to visiting Peoria.

The Blue Jays' Marcus Stroman, the fourth of five Salt River hurlers, took the loss. The 22-year-old yielded two singles wrapped around a ground out in the eighth, the latter hit driving in the tie-breaking score.

Cardinals farmhand Sam Gaviglio got the start for the home team. Gaviglio allowed a tally in the first via a lead-off single and two-out double but kept the opposition off the board over the second and third. The right-hander took a 3-1 lead into his fourth and final frame only to serve up a two-run shot that knotted the contest. Gaviglio permitted six hits and a walk in four while fanning three and tossing 68 pitches, 45 for strikes.

Stephen Piscotty and Jacob Wilson both started - the former as the designated hitter and the latter at second. Piscotty, batting sixth, came up in the first with one out, a run already across and runners at the corners but hit a soft liner to third. He got caught looking at strike three in the third and K'd swinging with a runner at first in the eighth. Piscotty's only hit in four at bats came in the sixth when he doubled to center immediately after Salt River's runner was nailed trying to swipe second.

Batting in the seven hole, Wilson was hitless in four plate appearances. He lined out to open the second and fourth before taking one for the team to start the seventh. Wilson finished his night at the plate by striking out swinging with a runner on third for the final out in the eighth.

Saturday's game: Off. The Bowman Hitting Challenge will take place at Salt River - with Stephen Piscotty among the 30 competitors - to be followed by the league's regular off-day on Sunday.
