Phillies option five to minor league camp

The Phillies made five more roster moves Tuesday to drop their spring training roster down to 42 players. Tyler Cloyd, Tyson Gillies and Sebastian Valle were the biggest of the names optioned down to minor league camp.

The Phillies welcomed outfielder Tyson Gillies (Canada) and catcher Sebastian Valle (Mexico) back from the World Baseball Classic by optioning them to minor league camp.

Ironically, both players were involved in a bench-clearing brawl between Mexico and Canada in the WBC last week. Phillippe Aumont, who was also a member of Team Canada, accused Valle of swinging his catcher's mitt at Canadian players during the brawl and made the accusations via Twitter. That particular Tweet has since been deleted.

Tyler Cloyd made three starts for the Phillies after having a breakout minor league season, pitching for both Reading and Lehigh Valley. In his two minor league stops, Cloyd was 15-1, 2.26 in 26 starts.

Also optioned were pitchers Mauricio Robles and B.J. Rosenberg.

Rosenberg, who pitched in 22 games with the Phillies last season, was struggling through a horrible spring. Rosenberg posted a 24.30 ERA in 3 1/3 innings of work this spring.

The Phillies claimed Robles off waivers from the Seattle Mariners over the winter.

None of the players were assigned to any specific minor league level, but it's likely that Cloyd, Gillies, Rosenberg and Robles will be at Lehigh Valley. Valle could also join the IronPigs, but it's likely that Tommy Joseph, who is ahead of Valle on the depth chart, will be at Lehigh Valley, which could limit playing time for both players. If Valle goes to Reading, he could potentially be splitting time there with Cameron Rupp, who is in line from a promotion from Clearwater where he played last season.
