Selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 3rd round, (91st pick overall), in the 2008 First Year Player Draft, 06/05/08.

2008 Season
Niko got off to a hot start with the Johnson City Cardinals, hitting a line of .317/.416/.462 (BA/OBP/SLG) through his first 55 professional games before being promoted to the Quad Cities River Bandits in August, where he played in 11 games, hitting just .128 (5-for-39) with a line of .128/.205/.154.

Ranked in the Appalachian League top 10 in on-base percentage (.416 - 2nd), walks (29 - 4th), runs (42 - 5th) and batting average (.317 - 9th). Niko was rated 13th-best prospect in the Appy League by Baseball America.
