2008 Season
Matt appeared in just five games for the Springfield Cardinals before being promoted to Memphis. At Memphis, Scherer held his own with a record of 2-3 and a 3.93 ERA in 40 games, 55.0 innings pitched. Scherer started the season with tightness of the forearm and being on the DL, but recovered nicely to post some decent numbers for the year.
2007 Season
Matt appeared in organizational high 55 games (3rd most Texas League) for Double-A Springfield, he went 4-3 with a 3.60 ERA in 70 innings pitched. He struggle some in winter ball, playing in 15 games for the Caribes de Caribes de Anzoategui, finishing the Venezuela Winter League with a 1-0 record and a 7.43 ERA.
Career Notes
Scherer spent the entire 2006 season with high Class A Palm Beach. Appearing in 53 games, he went 9-5 with a 3.25 ERA, allowing 71 hits, striking out 106 and walking 20 in 80.1 innings. Opponents hit .234 against him. He averaged 11.88 strikeouts per nine innings, 2nd-best to teammate Mike Sillman in the Florida State League. His 10.2 baserunners/9 innings ranked 3rd-best and 2.13 walks/9 innings ranked 5th in the league. His 53 games were 3rd-most in the FSL.
Scherer made his professional debut at
Rookie-level Johnson City in 2004, going 2-5 with a 4.03 ERA in 13 outings (12 starts). He struck out 43 and walked 16 in 60.1 innings of work. In 2005, he was assigned to low Class A Quad Cities on April 23rd and went 9-8 with a 3.96 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 24 starts over 134 innings. He allowed 146 hits and 43 walks while striking out 96.
