Selected in the supplemental first round (46th overall) in the June, 2005 First-Year Player Draft as compensation for the Giants' signing of free agent Mike Matheny. Received a $675,000 signing bonus.
2008 Season
Promoted to Springfield in May, Herron struggled with a 5-5 record and a 5.21 ERA, before being reassigned to the Palm Beach Cardinals, where he pitched 27 effective innings before his promotion to Double-A again. Herron finished the 2008 season with a combined 7-7 record with a 4.17 ERA.
Career Notes
Herron spent the entire 20007 season at Quad Cities (A) and went 10-7 with a 3.74 ERA (137.1 IP / 57 ER) in 30 games (22 starts).
Tyler walked 26 batters and fanned 130 in 137.1 IP. Averaged 1.69 walks per nine innings as a starter, 4th-lowest among Midwest League starters.
Herron was named Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June ‘07,
when he went 5-0 with a save and 2.27 ERA (31.2 IP / 8 ER) in
seven games (4 starts) for Quad Cities.
He joined Rookie-level Johnson City in June of 2006, from extended spring training. He made 13 starts for the club, going 5-6 with a 4.13 ERA. He allowed 69 hits, struck out 54 and walked 22 in 69.2 innings. Tyler was named Appalachian League Pitcher of the Week for 8/7-13 due to posting a pair of wins while not allowing an earned run in 13.2 innings. Herron was promoted to short-season Class A State College in late August, Herron made one start for the Spikes.
In 2005, Herron made 13 starts for Rookie-level Johnson City, going 0-3 with a 5.62 ERA, allowing 47 hits, striking out 49 and walking 27 in 49-2/3 innings. He averaged 8.88 strikeouts per nine innings, third-best among Cards minor league starters.
