2008 Season
Talk about your best bang for your buck, Schumaker made it very difficult for Cardinals manager Tony La Russa to keep him out of the lineup. Schumaker played in 153 games (120 starts), hitting .302 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs, batting often in the leadoff spot. He played above average defense (based on fielding percentage) in all three outfield positions, playing in CF (79 games), LF (56 games) and RF (33 games).
A fan favorite, who didn't do anything to disappoint in 2008.
2007 Season
Schumaker split playing time between Triple-A Memphis and St. Louis, hitting .333/.358/.458 with two home runs and 19 RBI for St. Louis in 88 games.
Career Notes
In 2006 Schumaker hit .306/.348/.382 in 95 games for Triple-A Memphis. In two stints in the majors, he hit .185 in 28 games. In August, Schumaker was named to the U.S. Olympic Qualifying Team. He finished the tournament hitting .405 (15-for-37) with six walks and 15 runs scored.
A fifth round draft pick in 2001, Schumaker was limited to just 91 games in 2003 due to a right wrist injury and a stress fracture in his right fibula. He made his major league debut on June 8, 2005, and had three stints with the major league club that season. Following the 2005 season, on Oct. 21, he had minor surgery on his right knee to repair a bursa sac. Including 2006, Schumaker has hit .205 in 78 major league at-bats. He is a .289 career hitter in six minor league seasons.
