Selected in the seventh round (215th overall) of the June, 2003 First-Year Player Draft. Received a $100,000 signing bonus.
2008 Season
The signing of infielder Felipe Lopez during the season cut into the potential playing time for Brendan Ryan with the Cardinals. Ryan did manage to play in 80 games with St. Louis, hitting .244 with no home runs and 10 RBIs in 197 at-bats. Ryan's career opportunities with the Cardinals may be limited, despite his speed and versatility.
2007 Season
Ryan split playing time between St. Louis and Memphis, playing a solid 67-game stint with St. Louis in his rookie season, hitting .289 with four home runs, 12 RBI, and 30 runs scored.
Career Notes
Added to the 40-man roster over the offseason, Ryan tore a ligament in his left wrist in spring training. He began the 2006 season on Springfield's disabled list, but when he returned in July he was sent on a rehab assignment to short-season Class A State College and then high Class A Palm Beach. He rejoined Springfield in late August, but was promoted to Triple-A Memphis after just 10 games. In 28 games total between the four stops, Ryan hit .265/.302/.308.
Following the season, he was sent to play for the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. He hit .310/.350/.421 and led the league in hits (39) and at-bats (126).
Ryan began his career with short-season Class A New Jersey after being drafted in 2003 and moved on to low Class A Peoria in 2004, where he won the Midwest League batting title (.322). He began the 2005 season with high Class A Palm Beach and spent nearly a month (May 17-June 14) on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Promoted to Double-A Springfield in July, he combined to hit .289/.349/.395 with 14 stolen bases between the two levels. He is a career .303 hitter with 59 steals in 278 career minor league games.
