Agent: Paul Cohen
Became a Cardinal
Signed as a free agent on December 1, 2006.
2008 Season
Kennedy probably played his last season in St. Louis, requesting to be traded in September, because of what he describes as not having a defined role on the team. Ironically it's his play that has limited his playing time. The Cardinals expected when signing him for three years for $10 million dollars, that he would be the everyday second baseman. He finished the season playing in 115 games, hitting .280, 2 HR and 36 RBIs. Still a servicable infielder with decent range, Kennedy had a .981 fielding percentage at second base this season.
2007 Season
Kennedy suffered the worst season of his career, hitting just hitting just .219 with three homers and 18 RBI along with six steals in 87 games. He had season ending surgery on his torn medial meniscus in his right knee in August.
Career Notes
Kennedy batted .273 during the 2006 campaign with four home runs and a career-high 55 RBI in his seventh season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The left-handed hitting second baseman was solid in the field, making just two errors in his final 67 games and nine total for the year. His season included a career-best 17-game hit streak (July 8-Aug. 3) and he batted .329 in Sept./Oct. while being named the Angels' Player of the Month. Adam also led the Angels in April batting with a .324 mark and for the year he batted .339 with runners in scoring position.
The Cardinals gave Kennedy a $650,000 signing bonus as a first round draft pick (20th overall) in 1997. He spent two-plus seasons (1997-99) in the Cardinals' minor league system and was named the team's Minor League Player of the Year in 1999, the same year he made his major league debut. He was dealt to the Angels along with pitcher Kent Bottenfield on March 23, 2000 in exchange for All-Star outfielder Jim Edmonds. Kennedy was named ALCS MVP in 2002 and also won a World Series ring. On September 20, 2004 Kennedy injured his right knee and underwent reconstructive surgery on October 15, to repair a complete tear of the ACL and partial tear of the MCL. He returned on May 2. 2005.
Kennedy ranks second on the Angels career list for games played at second base with 969. He tied for first among American League second basemen in fielding (.990) in 2003 and in 2002 he led the Angels with a .312 batting mark, the highest ever by an Angels second baseman. In 2000, Kennedy was named to both the Baseball Digest and Topps Rookie All-Star teams, leading all A.L. rookies in triples (11) and stolen bases (22).
