Became a Cardinal:
Selected in the fourth round (120th overall) of the June, 2004 First-Year Player Draft. Received a $235,000 signing bonus.

2006 Season:
Smith began the season in extended spring training and joined short-season Class A State College when their season began. He made six starts for the spikes, going 1-1 with a 3.23 ERA, allowing 31 hits, striking out 13 and walking five in 30.2 innings. On July 20, he was promoted to low Class A Quad Cities. He went 4-2 with a 3.57 ERA, allowing 40 hits, striking out 30 and walking 13 in 40.1 innings.

Career Notes:
In 2004, Smith went 3-3 with a 3.88 ERA in 46-1/3 innings, striking out 41 and walking only five for short-season Class A New Jersey. In 2005, he began the season in extended spring training because of shoulder problems. He was activated on May 29 and made five starts, going 1-2 with an ERA of 6.00 in 24 innings. He was placed on the disabled list on July 3 and underwent shoulder capsule surgery on August 18 to end his season.
