Became a Cardinal:
Selected in the supplemental first round (43rd overall) of the June, 2005 First-Year Player Draft as compensation for the Red Sox' signing of free agent Edgar Renteria. Received an $800,000 signing bonus.
2006 Season:
McCormick began the season with low Class A Quad Cities and made 10 starts before going on the disabled list on June 2 with a bone bruise in his right shoulder. He came off the disabled list and made one more start for the Swing before being going back on the DL due to shoulder inflammation on July 20. He was finally activated in late August and promoted to Palm Beach where he made two starts and posted an ERA of 11.25. In 11 starts for the Swing, he posted a 3.78 ERA, allowing 38 hits, striking out 63 and walking 38 in 52.1 innings. Following the season, He underwent shoulder surgery.
Career Notes:
In 2005, McCormick made two starts for short-season Class A New Jersey, allowing no runs and only one hit while striking out 10 and walking three in six innings before being promoted to low Class A Quad Cities on July 19. He made nine starts for the Swing, going 1-2 with a 5.48 ERA, allowing 41 hits, striking out 45 and walking 28 in 42.2 innings.
MISC:
Represented by Scott Boras, McCormick sought a $2 million signing bonus out of high school in 2002. The Cubs offered to select him in the second round and give him $1.4 million, but he declined and fell to the Orioles in the 11th round. He turned down their offer of $1.2 million, opting instead to attend Baylor.
