| BECAME A CARDINAL: Haberer was a third-round selection in the
2004 draft, out of Southern Illinois. The Bloomington native is
a lifelong Cardinals fan.
CAREER NOTES
Well-Regarded: Haberer is ranked as the 21st-best prospect
in the St. Louis system, according to Baseball America. The
publication says he has “good life on his fastball and good
command” and that he “shows good feel for a changeup.”
Local Talent: Haberer is the only native of Illinois or Iowa on
the Quad Cities roster.
2004 Season:Haberer made 12 starts between the
Appalachian and New York-Penn Leagues in 2004,
going 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA. He posted a 2.37 ERA in
three starts for New Jersey, although he did not receive
a decision.
COLLEGE CAREER: Haberer went 11-6 with a 4.01 ERA over 60
appearances at Southern Illinois University. He was named a
Lousville Slugger Freshman All-America in 2002, when he went
4-0 with a 4.12 ERA in 21 outings (one start).
In 2004,
Haberer moved into the starting rotation after the Salukis’ 0-9
start, and went 6-3 with a 3.54 ERA, recording 60 strikeouts in
84 innings and established himself as one of the best prospects in the state.
The Cardinals gave him a $422,500 bonus. -- Baseball America
