| Brownlie was the Cubs' first round pick in the 2002 draft from Rutgers. After opting for the Cubs over another season in college, his professional debut came in 2003 at Class-A Daytona, where he finished 5-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 13 starts.
The following year, Brownlie posted nine wins with a 3.36 ERA for AA-West Tenn, holding opposing hitters to a .236 average in 27 starts.
In his first season at AAA-Iowa in 2005, Brownlie was used both as a starter and a reliever. After struggling in the first half, he was moved to the bullpen, where from June 19 to July 30 he appeared in 13 games and went 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA totaling 24 innings. Brownlie registered 88-91 mph with his fastball and continued to rely on a good arsenal of offspeed pitches to compliment his repertoire.
