The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that centerfielder Jim Edmonds underwent right shoulder surgery earlier today.

Dr. George Paletta performed arthroscopic debridement of the AC joint and labrum in Edmonds' right (non-throwing) shoulder.

Edmonds struggled with physical problems that limited him to just 110 games during the regular season. He indicated to me earlier in the season that his shoulder had bothered him for a long time, but he just plays through the pain.

Edmonds, 36, will begin rehabilitation within one week and is expected to make a complete recovery by Opening Day 2007.

Edmonds hit .257 with 19 homers and 70 RBI this season. In seven seasons with the Cardinals, he has a .288 average with 229 home runs, placing him fourth on the team's all-time list.

Edmonds and the Cardinals agreed to a two year contract extension through 2008 last Friday.
