The St. Louis Cardinals have signed their 2010 ninth-round draft pick, left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons, and assigned him to the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League.
The 22-year-old was a senior at Oklahoma State this past spring where he went 3-6 with a 6.06 ERA in 14 games. He was previously drafted in 2009 by the New York Yankees in the 10th round following his junior year, but obviously did not sign.
The native of Lubbock, Texas completed his OSU career with a 22-14 record, with his 22 wins tying for 10th on the program's all-time list. Lyons also ranks in the top 10 on the Cowboys' career charts in innings pitched (308), strikeouts (266), starts (41) and appearances (65).
Lyons was a two-time All-Big 12 Conference performer and was also named to a pair of NCAA Regional All-Tournament Teams (2008 Stillwater Regional and 2009 Clemson Regional).
Lyons is the 39th member of the Cardinals draft class of 52 and 15th of their top 20 selections to come to terms. Among those unsigned are their first four selections, Zack Cox, Seth Blair, Tyrell Jenkins and Jordan Swagerty and their 12th rounder, Austin Wilson.
