Cardinals Sign Veteran Outfielder Randy Winn

Jon Jay to Memphis, Kyle Lohse to 60-day DL to make room for former Yankee, Giant, Mariner and Devil Ray.

The St. Louis Cardinals added another veteran to their roster on Saturday, announcing that switch-hitting outfielder Randy Winn has been signed to a free-agent contract after having recently been designated for assignment by the New York Yankees. The Cardinals optioned outfielder Jon Jay to Memphis (AAA) and transferred pitcher Kyle Lohse from the 15-day D.L. to the 60-day D.L. to make room for Winn. Winn will wear uniform #44 and is expected to be available for today's game vs. Milwaukee.

"Once we saw that Randy had become available, we quickly reached out to him," said Cardinals' Vice President/General Manager John Mozeliak. "He is a veteran outfielder who we think will help improve our depth. His versatility and experience should be a real nice fit for our roster."

Winn, who turns 36 on June 9, appeared in 29 games for the Yankees this season, batting .213 with a homer and 8 RBI. His last appearance came on May 22 against the Mets.

The 6-2, 193-pound Los Angeles native owns a career mark of .285 with 107 HR's and 645 RBI in 1,630 games with Tampa Bay (1998-02), Seattle (2003-05), San Francisco (2005-09) and the Yankees (2010). He was named to the American League All-Star team in 2002, batting .298 with 14 HR & 75 RBI that season.

Winn ranks 4th among all outfielders in hits (1,369) since 2002 and has proven to be durable, appearing in over 140 games in each of the past eight seasons. He has also compiled 30 or more doubles each of the past eight seasons, including a career high 42 in 2007 for the Giants. Winn has not made an error in his last 238 games (475 total chances) dating to 2008, a career-best errorless streak.
