The aftershocks of the Matt Holliday deal and continued needs in St. Louis are being felt throughout the upper levels of the Cardinals system as the Memphis Redbirds look to replace traded starting pitcher Clayton Mortensen.
In addition, the Major League club, in need of fresh arms, called on Redbirds starter Blake Hawksworth on Sunday. Memphis is expected to lose a third starter, as Mitchell Boggs, their Tuesday starting pitcher, was scratched and is rumored to be on his way to St. Louis.
25-year-old right-hander Trey Hearne (pictured) is being promoted from Double-A Springfield and will start for the Redbirds on Tuesday in Boggs’ place, reports the Springfield News-Leader.
A 2009 Texas League All-Star, Hearne leads the circuit with 10 wins while his 3.06 ERA ranks sixth. The Texan has struck out 72 and walked 37 in 108 2/3 Double-A innings.
The organization’s 28th-round pick in 2005 continues his rebirth this season after having been assigned to the Mexican League last summer. Hearne was both our Scout.com and the Cardinals organization’s Pitcher of the Month in June.
Taking Hearne’s place in the Springfield rotation will be left-hander Nick Additon (pictured), up from A-Advanced Palm Beach. The Cardinals’ 47th-round pick in 2006 will start Tuesday night at Arkansas.
Ironically, the 21-year-old Additon carries an ERA identical to his predecessor Hearne at 3.06. In 79 1/3 Florida State League innings, the Floridian has fanned 66 but walked 37.
In other news, the Cardinals released right-handed reliever Eddie Degerman. The 2006 fourth-round pick from Rice never could get untracked as a professional. The 25-year-old posted a 7.42 ERA in 26 games with Springfield this season. In 30 1/3 innings, Degerman walked a whopping 40 batters.
Left-handed reliever Samuel Freeman is expected to miss three weeks with inflammation in his left elbow, the paper reports. An up-and-comer in the system after having been taken in the 32nd round of the 2008 draft from Kansas, the 22-year-old has a 3.52 ERA in 15 games with Springfield. Prior to his June promotion from Palm Beach, Freeman was named a 2009 Florida State League All-Star.
