The Cardinals Major League Notebook 06/01

Posted Jun 1, 2009

Cardinals pitching has become fallible, not surprising since it was unlikely it could maintain a pace in which it allowed eight runs in nine games.

For the second time in three games Sunday, a Cardinals starter allowed four runs in a game although Adam Wainwright pitched reasonably well in seven innings.

But Wainwright, who had allowed only three runs in his previous 23 2/3 innings over three games, allowed San Francisco backup Rich Aurilia's first homer of the season in the seventh, breaking a tie, after giving up two runs in the fifth when the Cardinals had just taken a 3-1 lead.

The good news was the Brendan Ryan had three more hits in the leadoff spot, giving him five in the last two games. The bad news was that the Cardinals didn't run the bases particularly well and didn't add on in the fifth when they had two runs home and the bases loaded with one out and a two-run lead.

Manager Tony La Russa went for the gusto, using Chris Duncan as a replacement for Brian Barden but Duncan fanned and Wainwright flied out. The Giants seized the momentum and tied the game in their half of the fifth.

GIANTS 5, CARDINALS 3: OF Nick Stavinoha, making a bid to stay around longer -- perhaps months longer -- delivered another big hit, doubling home two runs in the fifth inning against San Francisco. But that was only one of two hits the Cardinals had with runners in scoring position in nine at-bats as they finished a six-game trip at 3-3.
