In their third cuts of the spring, the St. Louis Cardinals trimmed eight players from their major league spring training camp. The changes were announced following Monday’s loss to Detroit at Lakeland.
The organization optioned out four players already on the 40-man roster, pitchers Mitchell Boggs, Charlie Manning, Matt Scherer and outfielder Brian Barton.
Non-roster invitees re-assigned to minor league camp include pitchers Clayton Mortensen, Adam Ottavino, Jess Todd and infielder Allen Craig.
Boggs and Scherer had a late start due to injuries and Manning was essentially pushed aside when the Cardinals signed free agent left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes ten days ago. Barton was with the Cardinals the entire 2008 season with the exception of an injury rehab stint after having been selected in the December, 2007 Rule 5 Draft.
Right-handers Mortensen and Todd are expected to join Boggs in the Triple-A Memphis rotation, while Ottavino could also compete for a spot alongside them. Craig will likely be the Redbirds’ first baseman after bringing a hot bat to his first big-league camp.
These transactions leave 37 players in camp with the Cardinals. That includes seven non-roster invitees - outfielders Colby Rasmus and Jon Jay, infielder Joe Thurston, catchers Bryan Anderson and Matt Pagnozzi along with pitchers Fernando Salas and P.J. Walters.
