The St. Louis Cardinals protect two of 14 players eligible for the Rule 5 Draft, shortstop Tyler Greene and right-handed reliever Matt Scherer, both 25 years of age. Hurlers Mark McCormick and Luis Perdomo were among the 12 passed over.

In preparation for next month’s Rule 5 Draft, the St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contracts of shortstop Tyler Greene and right-handed pitcher Matt Scherer from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Greene batted .259 (97-for-374) with 16 home runs and 41 RBI in 97 games for Double-A Springfield before a promotion to Triple-A Memphis in late July. At Memphis, he batted .234 (26-for-111) with seven RBI. Greene combined for 20 stolen bases between the two stops.

The 25-year-old is currently playing for the Peoria Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League, where he is batting .289 (24-83) with three home runs and 13 RBI. Greene was the Cardinals 1st-round selection (30th overall) in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft after a stellar career at Georgia Tech.

Scherer was also eligible for the 2007 Rule 5 Draft, but was not taken. He improved his stock dramatically during the 2008 season, where he began at Springfield and pitched in five games before being summoned to Memphis.

The 25-year-old right-handed reliever appeared in 40 Pacific Coast League games and posted a 2-3 record and 3.93 ERA (55.0 IP / 24 ER). Scherer was originally selected by the Cardinals in the 16th round (480th overall) in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft from Le Moyne College.

With the two additions, the Cardinals currently have 37 players on their 40-man roster.

Two other players, former supplemental first-rounder but oft-injured right-handed starting pitcher Mark McCormick and right-handed reliever Luis Perdomo, were other players who may have been on the bubble, but ultimately were not protected.

McCormick, with great velocity but poor control, finished the season on the disabled list with A-Advanced Palm Beach. Perdomo, who this summer came to the Cardinals from the Cleveland Indians for Anthony Reyes with a strong track record, pitched unevenly in his Springfield stint and has delivered more of the same in winter ball for Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Republic.

Among other Cardinals Rule 5-eligible farmhands not protected: Cristofher Dumont, Cody Haerther, Trey Hearne, Elvis Hernandez, Kenny Maiques, Jon Mikrut, Matt Pagnozzi, Casey Rowlett, Mike Sillman and Brandon Yarbrough.
