Pujols Has Elbow Surgery

Posted Oct 13, 2008

Slugging St. Louis Cardinals first baseman opts for nerve surgery instead of MCL reconstruction. As a result, Albert Pujols is expected to be ready for spring training.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Monday that All-Star first baseman Albert Pujols underwent surgery on his right elbow earlier Monday in a procedure that included decompression and transposition of the ulnar nerve.

The surgery, which was performed by Cardinals team physician Dr. George Paletta, did not require reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament. Pujols will begin his rehabilitation this week and is expected to make his recovery by Spring Training.

Pujols elected to undergo surgery after consultation with Paletta and additional specialists, including Dr. James Andrews.

Pujols, 28, is a leading candidate for National League MVP honors after batting .357 (2nd in N.L.) and leading the Cardinals in home runs (37) and RBI (116) this season.
