Each tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Both Beltre, a pitcher, and Beras, an outfielder, tested positive for a metabolite of Boldenone. Pena, a pitcher, tested positive for metabolites of Stanozolol.
All three suspensions are effective immediately. Since the DSL Cardinals have only 20 games remaining this season, the penalties should run over into the 2009 campaign, as well.
Beras, 17, from San Pedro de Marcoris, DR, was struggling with the bat, having posted a line of .140/.196/.163 in 43 at-bats over 16 games for the 2008 DSL Cards. He was signed last July.
Beltre, still just 16 years old, was signed just last month from Azua, DR. The left-hander's professional introduction has also been rocky from the start, as he allowed six earned runs in 4.1 innings on seven hits and nine walks. Beltre fanned just four.
Also a left-hander, Pena just turned 17 years of age one week ago. The Bani, DR native was also signed in June. In 4.1 innings over five games, he yielded two runs on two hits, but walked eight and fanned five.
