On Wednesday, 23 of the 24 members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team were named. Two Cardinals prospects are included, infielder Brian Barden and outfielder Colby Rasmus. Both are members of Triple-A Memphis.
Barden, 27, joined the Cardinals organization last August on a waiver claim from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D’backs originally took him in the sixth round of the 2002 draft. He had a total of 35 major league at-bats with Arizona and St. Louis in 2007.
This season, the Redbirds’ shortstop has posted a .303/.371/.458 line (BA/OBP/SLG) with nine home runs and 34 RBI in 356 at-bats.
Rasmus, 21, is the Cardinals top prospect and one of the most promising minor leaguers in the game today. Though he started off slowly in the first two months of the season, hitting just .213, Rasmus came on strongly in June, when he hit .333/.441/.535.
The Alabama native, a veteran of international competition, is currently on the disabled list with a groin injury, but is expected to be back in action in time for Olympic play.
Opening ceremonies will be on August 8 in Beijing, China. Team USA begins play against Korea on August 13. Seven games are scheduled prior to the semi-finals on August 22 and the Medal Round, to be held on August 23, the day prior to the Closing Ceremonies of the XXIX Olympiad.
Led by veteran MLB manager and former player Davey Johnson, Team USA will be playing four tune-up games against the Canadian Olympic Team in the Raleigh, NC area from August 1-4.
