Albert Pujols broke
a 9-9 tie with a three-run home run in top of the 10th, following
singles by Preston Wilson and David Eckstein. The Cubs tied it in the bottom of the
ninth on Mark DeRosa’s two-run shot off Jason Isringhausen after Scott Rolen had
put the Cardinals up 9-7 on a two-run triple. Tyler Johnson and Russ Springer combined
for a 1-2-3

Gary Bennett hit a
two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cardinals the win
after Pujols and Juan Encarnacion had singled, Ron Belliard walked and Aaron Miles had forced out Pujols at home. Gary Bennett had also singled home the game
winner in the previous game.

three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie, following a
walk to David Eckstein and a single by Abraham Nunez. It was followed by a Jim Edmonds homer

yielded three straight singles and a walk and was replaced by Julian Tavarez who

Carpenter-Carlos Zambrano pitching duel went into extra innings 1-1 before the
Cardinals won it in the bottom of 11th on David Eckstein’s squeeze
bunt. John Mabry led off the inning
with a triple and then was pinch run for by Hector Luna. After So Taguchi grounded out, the
Cardinals used the squeeze for the win.

the bottom of the eighth with a walk and was at third after a Mabry sacrifice
and Tony Womack groundout with Renteria at the plate when a passed ball by
just-inserted Paul Bako allowed the run to score. The Cardinals trailed 9-5 but got RBIs
from Hector Luna, Taguchi and Womack in the sixth and a sacrifice fly from Luna

to Mike Matheny in the bottom of the ninth broke a 3-3 tie and gave the
Cardinals the win. The winning
rally started when Kyle Farnsworth walked Pujols, then Kent Mercker walked
Edmonds. Next LaTroy Hawkins came in and Rolen
sacrificed before Renteria was intentionally walked and Reggie Sanders popped

Kerry Robinson led
off the bottom of the ninth with a home run for the victory. The Cubs led 2-0 in the sixth with
Carlos Zambrano on the mound but Zambrano’s two-out throwing error on Matt
Morris ground ball allowed Robinson to come up and double in a run to cut it to
2-1. Scott Rolen followed the next

Scott Rolen scored
the winning run on a wild pitch by Kyle Farnsworth in the bottom of the
eighth. Pujols and
Edmonds led off the inning
with singles before Farnsworth was brought in. He proceeded to walk Rolen and gave up a
two-run single to Tino Martinez before uncorking a wild pitch with Renteria at
the plate. An Eduardo Perez
groundout accounted for the final run.

Ivan Cruz singled
home the winning run in the bottom of the 13th against Antonio Alfonseca helping the Cardinals maintain their 5-½ game lead. Renteria walked with one out and stole
second before Cruz’s two-out hit.
This was Cruz’s last stop in the majors as 14 of his 55 career at-bats
