On Saturday, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A and Double-A teams traveled to Port St. Lucie to meet the
Mets while the three Single-A teams remained home. Two of the clubs faced their
Mets counterparts while the “Quad Cites #2” squad played Gildea’s Raiders, a
traveling club that the Cardinals have faced in recent Marches.
Sunday is a simple day as all five
teams remain home to face their co-habitants of the Roger Dean Stadium complex,
the Florida Marlins, who will take the short walk over from their side.
Scout.com Cardinals Pitcher of the
Day -
Saturday
Joe Rogers spun three scoreless
innings, allowing just two hits and walking none. He fanned two. The recent
signee throws the knuckleball 30% of the time. It must have been working well
for him on this day.
Scout.com Cardinals Hitter of the
Day -
Saturday
For Quad Cities #2, Collin Fanning
had two triples in three at-bats, drove in four and coaxed a walk, too. He was
not called upon to pitch or coach, however! Fanning was also 2-for-3 on
Friday.
Memphis lost to
New Orleans,
5-4
The
other pitchers couldn’t quite match Rogers.
Blake Hawksworth
continued to be wild and dominating at the same time. He went 2.2 IP, walking
three and fanning four. He yielded one earned run. Nick Webber, who made the
trip to Vero with the big club Friday, but didn’t pitch, gave up one run in two
innings. Dennis Dove, who
left the 40-man roster last season
and then was injured, requiring surgery, probably needs to get some innings in.
He was charged with three runs on three hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an
inning, taking the loss.
The batting leaders included a
possible 2008 renaissance man, outfielder Reid Gorecki, who went 2-for-5 and
added an RBI. Catcher Gabe Johnson doubled and drove in a couple, while first
baseman Mike Ferris collected an RBI with his two hits.
Springfield tied with
Binghamton,
2-2
Brandon Dickson spun three
scoreless innings. He allowed a pair of hits and walks and struck out one. A
nice outing for Cotton. Fernando Salas didn’t fare as well in his three innings,
allowing five hits and two earned runs. Kyle Sadlowski got it done wth two
scoreless innings, with a strikeout. Recent signee Bob Zimmerman pitched a
scoreless ninth to protect the tie.
Coming off a good winter campaign,
outfielder Dan Nelson went deep for one of the Springfield runs. Our number 12 prospect in
the system, first baseman Mark Hamilton doubled, walked twice and earned one
RBI.
Palm Beach defeated St. Lucie,
4-1
Palm
Beach’s pitchers are getting ready for
the season. Starter Brian Broderick scattered three harmless hits in three
scoreless. Logan Collier picked up the win with two one-hit innings. Armando Carrasco contributed two scoreless innings, too.
Former shortstop, now outfielder
Tommy Pham may be one of the very hottest hitters in camp. On Saturday, he went
2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Steven Hill had a 3-for-4 day with a
run scored and an RBI, coming off a two-RBI game on Friday. Second baseman
Brandon Johnson, in camp on a make-good deal, is living up to his side of the
bargain. He went 2-for-2 with a double.
Quad Cities #1 defeated
Savannah,
5-3
Wayne Daman had a nice bounceback
outing, going three scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and a walk and
fanned one. Eduardo Sanchez collected the win with a pair of scoreless frames of
his own. Sanchez yielded just one walk and one hit. He struck out two. Francisco Samuel picked up the save with a perfect ninth.
Any other day, going 3-for-4 with
a walk and two runs scored would be good enough for a Player of the Day nod for
Justin Roberson. First baseman Andrew Brown had a triple among his two hits. He
scored twice and collected an RBI for a balanced performance. Osvaldo Morales
and Beau Riportella each had a pair of hits and an RBI and Morales added a walk,
too.
Quad Cities #2 defeated Gildea’s
Raiders, 11-3
Jose Mateo earned the win with
three scoreless and hitless innings. Chuckie Fick pitched two innings, allowing two
hits, two runs. Both pitchers fanned four.
Charlie Kingrey went 3-for-4 and
Charlie Pelt and Will Groff each contributed two hits
each.
