Posted Dec 8, 2007

The 22-year-old lefty makes his debut on our list, though his late-season struggles in his initial Florida State League action cause concern for some.

Staff Comments (individual rankings in parens)

Leonda Markee (31): Furnish was my 31st-ranked prospect and 19th-ranked pitching prospect so this overall ranking is pretty much spot on. He is a 2nd-round 2006 draft selection that was not ranked in last season’s Top 40. Furnish put up a tidy 1.02 WHIP and .191 BAA in 81.2 innings at class-A Quad Cities.

He struggled with his control after his promotion to Palm Beach which impacted his numbers there. Furnish walked an average of just under three batters every nine innings while at Quad Cities but that ballooned to almost five and one-half batters every nine innings at Palm Beach. Control is an issue but he is not alone in battling this problem.

He held the opposition to under a hit an inning with 33 hits allowed in 36.2 innings pitched at Palm Beach. Furnish is left-handed which certainly helps his case and turns 23 in January. Being able to pitch effectively at the Double-A level next season would do a great deal to raise his prospect status.

Dustin Mattison (35): A polished college lefty, Furnish has a nice loose arm and a repeatable delivery. In his first taste of full season ball, Furnish was superb, posting a 2.42 ERA and allowing only a .191 batting average against at the Quad Cities. The 22-year-old who was known for his control in college, really struggled with it after a promotion to Palm Beach, giving out 22 walks compared to 24 strikeouts in 36 innings. Furnish improved as he gained experience, posting an ERA of 3.91 in his last four starts.

If the Texas Christian product can get a hold on his command problems, he could move quickly through the system. He should start the year back at Palm Beach but with a quick start he could find himself in the Texas League by mid-summer. Possibly the biggest knock against Furnish is that he is a fly ball pitcher in a system that stresses the groundball.

Ray Mileur (33): The Cardinals second round supplemental draft pick in 2006, Furnish split playing time in ‘07 with the Swing of Quad Cities and the Palm Beach Cardinals, posting a combined record of 6-6 with two saves and a 3.19 ERA.

Furnish is a quality left-hander with a decent fastball, a good curve and a changeup that is improving. He depends on location to be effective. Some cause of concern is his WHIP, which went from 1.02 at Quad Cities to 1.50 at Palm Beach. The Cardinals considered him one of the top lefties in the 2006 draft; he’ll get another chance to prove it, likely starting the season at Palm Beach.

Brian Walton (27): Leonda may think that I don’t listen to her that often, but I have to give her a lot of credit here. She was too modest to mention in her section of this report that she is the only one of us that ranked Furnish in this process one year ago. Leonda was right; Furnish clearly belongs on this list.

I accept that Furnish struggled in his introduction to the Florida State League, but we are talking about eight games here of which only five were starts. I am not ready to let that short stretch alter my view of the lefty’s career runway, which was elevated by his impressive stint with Quad Cities documented above. Still, there is work to be done. In 2008, I would love to see him improve his control and begin to induce a few more ground balls.
