Cards' Hamilton to Replace Shorey in AFL

Due to injury, outfielder Mark Shorey is unable to go in the Arizona Fall League and has been replaced by first baseman Mark Hamilton.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on Saturday that outfielder Mark Shorey's sore knee will preclude his participation in the Arizona Fall League. With camps open and the first games coming on Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals assigned first baseman Mark Hamilton to be Shorey's replacement.

Shorey had joined the Mesa Solar Sox roster when Colby Rasmus was named to Team USA. On the Solar Sox, Joe Mather will shift from first base to the outfield to balance out the positional shifts.

Hamilton, 23, was the Cards' second round pick in the 2006 draft from Tulane. This season, the left-handed slugger split his time between Palm Beach, where he was a Florida State League All-Star, and Double-A Springfield, where he had been promoted in mid-June.

Between the two stops, the 6-foot-4, 220-pounder was good for 19 home runs and 90 runs batted in. Overall, Hamilton posted a .269/.332/.448 stat line (AVG/OBP/SLG) in his second professional season.
