Cards 2007 Instructional League Ready to Go

The St. Louis Cardinals have invited 61 prospects to their Winter Instructional League Camp in Jupiter, Florida. The youngsters will play 23 official games between mid-September and mid-October.

Under the direction of Minor League Field Coordinator Jim Riggleman and his staff, the St. Louis Cardinals are preparing to welcome 61 of their prospects to their Winter Instructional League Camp in Jupiter, Florida.

This year's bumper crop of athletes features 28 players drafted in 2007, including the top ten signed. Among the participants are first-rounder, shortstop Pete Kozma, and three top pitchers - supplemental first-rounder Clayton Mortensen along with second-rounders David Kopp and Jess Todd.

Other big names include several top prospects that include a pair of rehabbing right-handed pitchers - Jaime Garcia and Stuart Pomeranz. Garcia, our third-ranked prospect last off-season here at The Birdhouse, is coming back from elbow problems and Pomeranz, ranked number seven, continues his shoulder rehab. Pomeranz will leave before the end of camp to report to the Arizona Fall League in early October.

Another intriguing name on the roster is the Cardinals' big July 2nd international signee, 19-year-old ex-Cuban outfielder Ryde Rodriguez. The youngster, who made a stop in Venezuela last winter, now lives in the Dominican Republic and received a reported $460,000 to sign with the Cardinals.

After running an abbreviated camp in 2006, when only 25 players participated and games consisted of intra-squad scrimmages, 2007 marks a return to a more traditional schedule for "Instructs".

The youngsters will play 23 official games between September 18 and October 12 against comparable squads nearby representing the Florida Marlins (Jupiter), Washington Nationals (Viera) and New York Mets (Port St. Lucie). Players are expected to report on September 15 and will head home on October 13.

Games are scheduled at 1:00 P.M. but times could vary based on weather or other logistical issues. Workouts and home games are held on the back fields of the Jupiter complex with Marlins camp also just a stone's throw away. (The two organizations share the Roger Dean Stadium complex.)
