Seven top St. Louis Cardinals prospects will participate in the 2007 Arizona Fall League as members of the Mesa Solar Sox, led by the organization’s number one prospect, outfielder Colby Rasmus.

On Monday, players for this year’s Arizona Fall League (AFL), MLB’s premier prospect showcase were announced. The seven St. Louis Cardinals players participating are four pitchers, Jason Motte, Stuart Pomeranz, Chris Perez and Mitchell Boggs along with infielders Joe Mather and Jarrett Hoffpauir and outfielder Colby Rasmus.

All players are either culled from the top prospects on the Memphis (Triple-A) or Springfield (Double-A) rosters, with the exception of AFL returnee Pomeranz. The big righty, slowed by shoulder problems all spring long, was on the Springfield roster and could have earned a spot in Memphis this season. However, he is currently with Palm Beach of the Florida State League, continuing his rehabilitation process from arthoscopic surgery.

This year, the Cardinals prospects will be competing as members of the Mesa Solar Sox. The Solar Sox will have a decidedly-Central Division flavor this season as the Cardinals will be joined in supplying players by the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and Milwaukee Brewers.

Cardinals’ minor league pitching coordinator Mark Riggins will serve as pitching coach for Mesa under manager Dave Clark from the Astros organization. Clark is the skipper of the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Double-A Texas League.

The AFL’s 16th season will run from October 9 through November 17. There are a total of six clubs in the AFL, each with players drawn from five MLB organizations. All teams located in the Phoenix area. Games are played six days a week, with Sundays off.

In an interesting twist this season, there will be a seventh team competing during the last week in October. Team USA will prepare for their November international play with one game against each of the six AFL squads before heading to Taiwan for the 2007 International Baseball Federation World Cup.

Davey Johnson, former Major League manager and player, will again lead the USA team. That roster has not yet been set, but if one of more of the Cardinals are chosen, AFL replacements would then be named.

Last season, the Cardinals sent the following players to Arizona: starting pitcher Pomeranz and relievers Dennis Dove, Eric Haberer and Mike Parisi along with shortstop Brendan Ryan and outfielders Amaury Marti and Nick Stavinoha.

In 2005, pitcher Andy Cavazos, Cory Doyne and Chris Lambert, outfielder Cody Haerther, third baseman Travis Hanson and catcher Gabe Johnson, all from Springfield, plus Rich Scalamandre from Palm Beach represented the organization. Lambert and Hanson also joined Team USA.
