Spiezio traveled back to St. Louis and infielder Brendan Ryan has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis.
"He got antibiotics and improved it, but it reoccurred," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said, in a report filed by MLB.com Reporter Matthew Leach. "We looked at other alternatives, but decided to go this way."
It's a recurrence of the problem for Spiezio, who was hospitalized at the end of June because of the infection. Spiezio spent three days after missing his first game on June 27th against the Mets because of the infection.
Scott had been getting antibiotics intravenously for an infection in his left index finger, and was considered day-to-day prior to be moved to the 15-day-DL, Sunday.
The valuable utility player had appeared in only four games for the Cardinals this month, going 2-for-6 with an RBI and drawing two bases on ball.
Infielder Brendan Ryan was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take Spiezio's place on the 25-man-roster.
