Three Independence Day Moves in Memphis

John Rodriguez activated from the disabled list, John Nelson sold to the Chicago Cubs and Jarrett Hoffpauir promoted from Double-A Springfield.

Our Memphis beat reporter Brent Diederich reports the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds made three player moves on Wednesday, July 4.

Rodriguez activated

In a very welcome sight, outfielder John Rodriguez was activated from the disabled list. He is in the Memphis lineup on Wednesday night, playing in right field and batting fifth in the Redbirds order as they take on the Albuquerque Isotopes at AutoZone Park.

Rodriguez, 29, is batting .255 in 48 games for Memphis this season. He has hit six home runs and drove in 22 in 141 at-bats.

Battling shoulder and knee ailments this season, the 6-foot, 205 pound left-hander has been on the disabled list twice this season. He missed games from May 18 through June 1 followed by his second DL stint which began on June 24 due to knee problems.

Nelson sold to Cubs

Utilityman John Nelson has been acquired by the Chicago Cubs in return for cash considerations. This season, the 28-year-old right-handed hitter batted just .162 with five home runs and 14 RBIs over 47 games for the Redbirds while playing in the infield and outfield. He struck out 41 times in 105 at-bats.

In 2006, Nelson hit .215 with 21 home runs and 48 RBIs in 125 games for Memphis. The Cardinals purchased his contract last September for his first-ever MLB action. Nelson went hitless in five at-bats for the Cards before being removed from the 40-man roster following the season.

Nelson played in the Arizona Fall League in both 2003 and 2004 by the Cardinals, the latter after missing most of the 2004 season after tearing ligaments in his ankle. He was originally selected by the Cardinals organization in the eighth round of the 2001 draft out of the University of Kansas.

Hoffpauir promoted

Jarrett Hoffpauir has been called up to Memphis from the Double-A Springfield Cardinals. The mid-season Texas League All-Star has put up a stellar .345/.420/.527 (BA/OBP/SLG) line for the Cards this season. He has hit seven home runs and drove in 33 in 203 Springfield at-bats.

Last season, the now 24-year-old hit .249 with seven home runs and 46 RBI in 393 at-bats for the Cards. Hoffpauir was taken by the Cardinals from Southern Mississippi in the sixth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft.

Jarrett's older brother Micah is a member of the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, likely to become one of Nelson's new teammates.
