Jason Scott (16): Greene fell eight spots to
No. 16 in my rankings this year. Ending a season at a lower level than they
finished the previous season is never a good thing for a player, and that's
exactly what Greene did in 2006. He did quite well after his demotion to Quad
Cities, hitting .287/.375/.552 with 15 home runs and 47 RBI, but he still struck
out 65 times in 64 games. One bright spot in his season, however, was that he
led the organization with 33 stolen bases, getting caught just three times. The
key for Greene to move up the system will be improving his plate discipline.
Leonda Markee (23):
After reviewing my ranking of Tyler Greene and
comparing that ranking with others, I think I ranked him a bit low. I
placed him as my 11th-best position prospect, just behind Mark Hamilton and those two should probably be flipped. However, I still have
Greene behind Daryl Jones when ranking position prospects and think a drop
from my 2005 ranking of 6th is entirely merited.
Greene’s overall 2006 performance was a
disappointment, particularly so for a first-round draft pick. After
skipping Quad Cities by going from short A New Jersey to A-Advanced Palm
Beach in 2005, Greene began 2006 at Palm Beach. He struggled there for
about a half of a season before being re-assigned to Quad Cities on June 30th.
His numbers improved while with the Swing but certain areas remain of a
concern. Greene’s average strikeouts per at bat went from 1:2.98 at Palm
Beach to 1:3.43 at Quad Cities which is marginal. His walk rate decreased
from 1:10.45 plate appearances to 1:12.8 plate appearances. Greene did
average a home run every 24.5 at bats which was good for 8th
place among batters with 200 or more at bats in St. Louis’ minor league
system. For Greene’s sake I hope the Cardinals do not try and start him in
Springfield to start 2007 because he does not appear to be ready. Let him
succeed at Palm Beach first.
Ray Mileur (14): Greene, a sandwich pick in the first round of the 2005, was sent back down
to low-A Quad Cities this season after struggling at high-A Palm Beach. He
didn’t play nearly as well as we expected. He struggled at the plate when he
made it to Palm Beach, hitting just .224/.308/.325.
Greene's defense though inconsistent at times and baserunning are already
big league ready. At the plate he is too pull-conscious and swings and
misses too often.
He is still one of the top five athletes in the system and
clearly has potential to be a major league shortstop, but I don't expect a
break through year this season.
There was some expectations that Greene would be playing for
Double-A Springfield this season, but it’s more likely that he’ll be
returned to the Palm Beach Cardinals to start the season.
Brian Walton
(11): Perhaps I am unique to have not yet hopped off this
bandwagon, but I don’t think so, as Greene just missed my top ten. The
23-year-old’s size, speed and baserunning skills are not changing despite
perhaps being moved up too quickly initially.
I also remain optimistic that the 2005 first-rounder can
correct his well-documented problems at the plate, which include an inside-out
swing and a lack of discipline at times. Another caution is that some have
accused Greene of being a mistake hitter only.The resultant contact problems contributed to a
disappointing early 2006, before he recovered to hit .287 with 15 home runs and
47 RBI for Quad Cities. Greene still fanned 155 times in 491 at-bats overall
between the Swing and Palm Beach. His 33 stolen bases paced the system.
Whether Greene’s offense can translate to a major league
career at the shortstop position or at all remains debatable, despite being
credible in both arm and range. He made 33 errors in 2006 compared to 18 the
season before.Greene should have at least a chance to make Springfield during 2007, but it
would probably be best if he starts the season back at Palm Beach.
