OF Terry Evans Traded to Anaheim

Posted Jul 5, 2006

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Wednesday evening that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Jeff Weaver and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for minor league outfielder Terry Evans. Evans hitting .310 with 22 home runs this season, was quickly becoming one of the most popular players in the Cardinals Minor League system.

Weaver, who will turn 30 in August, was designated for assignment by the Angels last week after going 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 games. Weaver worked into the 6th inning in 12 of his 16 starts for the Angels this year while compiling 88.2 IP with 62 strikeouts. He made his final start for the Angels on June 27.

The 6-5, 200-pound former number one draft choice (Detroit-1998) has compiled a career mark of 81-97 with a 4.55 ERA in 1484.2 innings pitched. He is just one strikeout shy of 1,000 for his career.

"We feel that Weaver is someone who can come in and lend immediate help and depth to our rotation," said Cardinals' Senior Vice President/General Manager Walt Jocketty. "Tony, (La Russa) and Dave Duncan have studied plenty of video from his starts, and feel that Jeff is still a very capable pitcher."

In his eight-plus seasons with Detroit (1999-2002), the Yankees (2002-03), Dodgers (2004-05) and Angels (2006), Weaver has won 10 or more games five times, including a career-high 14 last season. He's surpassed the 200 innings mark on five occasions and is ranked 19th among active pitchers in fewest walks/9 IP (2.46) and 21st among active players in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.46).

Weaver took part in the postseason for three-straight seasons from 2002-04, including a World Series appearance with the Yankees in 2003.

Evans, 24, was the Cardinals 47th round draft selection in 2001. He compiled a .239 career batting average with 40 home runs prior to this season and is batting a combined. 310 with 22 home runs between Palm Beach (A) and Springfield (AA) this season.
