The Birdhouse 2005 Player of the Year

Recognizing the best overall offensive season in the entire St. Louis Cardinals minor league system in 2005.

We have now come to The Birdhouse Player of the Year for the 2005 season. This stats-based award is presented to the position player having the best overall offensive season. The player had to have accumulated at least 3.1 at bats per game from the point they were eligible to play during the 2005 season and an overall minimum one hundred fifty at bats.

And the winner is….

Nick Stavinoha – Right Field/First Base – Swing of the Quad Cities

Stavinoha went .344/.398/.564/.962, eighty-six hits in two hundred fifty at bats. He led the Cardinals' minor league system in batting average and OPS for the season, was third in on-base and slugging percentage, fourth in home runs per at bat ratio (1:17.9) and had the fifth best strikeout per plate appearance ratio at 1:11.

Stavinoha was a seventh round 2005 draftee out of Louisiana State University. He signed with the Cardinals on June 22nd and was assigned to class A Quad Cities. Stavinoha was placed at the highest minor league level of the Cardinals' 2005 draft class. He was activated on June 26th and played regularly through the end of the Swing's regular season on September 5th. Stavinoha appeared in right field for fifty-five games and at first base seven times and was charged with one error. During the Swing's abysmal post-season, Stavinoha's solo home run was one of only five Swing hits and one of only two runs scored by the Swing.

My counter to the argument that the 23-year-old was "too old" for his league to be considered for post-season mention (a position taken by Baseball America) is to point out the multiple discrepancies in that logic, as demonstrated by that publication. One of BA's top twenty in the short-season A New York-Penn League is five weeks younger than Stavinoha and one of their top twenty for the rookie level Appalachian League is a whole ten months younger than Stavinoha.

In any event, on behalf of Ray, Brian, Jason and the rest of The Birdhouse contributors, I congratulate Nick Stavinoha on his 2005 season.
