Compared to Wednesday, it was a
much less eventful game for the Surprise Scorpions on Thursday, as they defeated
the Peoria Saguaros by a 11-4 score at the Peoria Sports Complex, evening their
season record at 13-13, good for a tie for first place in the Arizona Fall
League’s American Division.
2005 first-round draft pick of the
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Jared Weaver, got the start and earned the win
for Surprise. His brother is Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jeff Weaver.
The only one of the seven
Cardinals prospects to see action Thursday was Travis Hanson. He started at
third base, hitting sixth and played the entire nine innings.
Here’s a shorthand version of how
Hanson’s day went.
Scorpions second. Hanson drew a two-out walk off
starter Landon Jacobsen, from the Pirates system. He did not
advance.
Scorpions third. With two outs and a runner on
first, the left-handed hitting Hanson slammed a ball into the right-center field
gap. Only a very good defensive play allowed the ball to be cut off quickly,
holding Hanson to a long, hard single. He was stranded.
Saguaros third. Hanson drew applause from the
crowd as he made a very difficult running catch on a foul pop. He was leaning
over the tarp down the left field line, making the catch cleanly on a ball off
the bat of Saguaros clean-up hitter Adam Lind (Blue Jays).
Scorpions fifth. Hanson flied out the left fielder
for the second out of the inning.
Scorpions seventh. Hanson came up with two out. He
drew his second walk of the day and scored on a three-run home run by
Kansas
City’s Billy Butler.
Saguaros seventh. Hanson started a nifty
5-4-3 double
play.
Scorpions ninth. Leading off, Hanson fanned
swinging on a pitch in the dirt.
Summary:
Hanson – game - 1-for-3 with two
walks
Hanson – AFL – 20-for-75 (.267)
with one home run and five RBI.
