Jim Anderson, St. Louis Cardinals assistant director of media relations, announced today that the Cardinals have purchased the contract of outfielder Rick Ankiel from Double-A Springfield and released former Springfield pitcher Evan Rust to maintain the Cardinal's 40-man roster.
According to Anderson, Ankiel performed well in his first full season of professional baseball as a position player, batting a combined .259
with 21 home runs and 75 RBI in 85 games split between Double-A Springfield and Single-A Quad Cities. He had 10 home runs and 35 RBI,
while batting .243 in 34 games at Springfield.
Ankiel finished his season strong, batting .276 with seven doubles,10 home runs, and 30 RBI in his final 28 games at Springfield. Included
in ths span was a stretch of hitting in 10 of 11 games (.283, 15-53. 3 HR, 10 RBI) from August 9--20.
