(04/23) Redbirds Scratch Out 4-3 Win over Royals

MEMPHIS REDBIRDS PRESS RELEASE

04/23/05 - Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis fought back with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings after Omaha took a 3-2 lead and held on to defeat the Royals 4-3 Saturday night at AutoZone Park.

RF Raul Gonzalez, making his first start, went 3x3, and 1B Chris Duncan added three hits for the Redbirds in the opener of the eight-game homestand. Duncan led off the sixth inning with a double, went to third on a single by 3B Scott Seabol, and scored the go-ahead run when LF John Gall hit into a fielder's choice. RHP Jeremy Cummings (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter RHP Nerio Rodriguez, and RHP Toby Borland struck out the only two batters he faced in the ninth for his fourth save.

The Redbirds and Royals face off at 2:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the second game of the series.

IN OTHER NEWS

After joining the Springfield Cardinals just five days ago, catcher Brad Cresse was returned to Triple-A Memphis on Saturday morning. Cresse rejoins the Redbirds, where earlier this season, he had appeared in three games, going 2-9 for a .222 batting average. A wrist injury to Memphis Redbirds catcher Cody McKay prompted the move.
