Tulsa drills Cardinals 3-2 - Friday Night

Posted Apr 23, 2005

April 23, 2005 - Corey Slavik's RBI hit off the top of the right field wall in the bottom of the ninth, gave the Tulsa Drillers a 3-2 victory on Friday night at Drillers Stadium in Tulsa.

Tied at 2-2 with one out in the bottom of the ninth, Tulsa's Gustavo Escobar hit a bouncing ball off first baseman Bo Robinson's glove. The play was initially ruled an error but later changed to a base hit. Escobar then swiped second base, putting the winning run in scoring position. Tony Miller would then ground out to short for the second out of the ninth. After walking Jeff Salazar intentionally, Springfield reliever Andy Cavazos (0-1) was removed in favor of Josh Axelson. Slavik golfed a 2-2 Axelson pitch off the top of the wall in right field, scoring Escobar with the winning run.

Springfield starting pitcher Randy Leek had another great start, going seven innings, while allowing just two runs. Springfield gave Leek a 1-0 lead, scoring a run in the second inning, as Bo Robinson knocked in Papo Bolivar with a two-out single.

Leek allowed a two-run double to Tulsa's Dan Conway in the bottom of the fourth, as the Drillers took a 2-1 lead. With one out, Jayson Nix and Ryan Spilborghs singled consecutively. Conway then pulled a pitch off the wall in left field, scoring both Nix and Spilborghs.

The Cards tied the game in the sixth, as Papo Bolivar's two-out triple, knocked in Kevin Estrada from second base. That would be it for the Springfield offense though, as Jentry Beckstead (2-0) worked the final three innings, keeping the Cards off the board and earning the win.

The loss is the second straight for the Cards, as they fall to 6-9, and 3-3 on the current 10-game road trip. The Drillers move to 9-6 and are now just one game behind the Arkansas Travelers in the East Division. Saturday night, the Cards send Jeremy Cook (1-0) to the mound against Christian Parker (1-0) of the Drillers. Game time from Tulsa is 7:05.

The Cards return to Hammons Field on Thursday, April 28th to face the Corpus Christi Hooks. Great seats are still available by calling the Springfield Cardinals ticket office at (417) 863-2143.
