SPRINGFIELD CARDINALS PRESS RELEASE

April 21, 2005 - Springfield’s bid to reach .500 for the first time this season will have to wait as the Wranglers pounded the Cardinals by a 15-6 score on Thursday afternoon at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita. The 15 runs were a season-high for the Wranglers, as each player in the starting lineup had at least one hit and scored one run. Designated hitter Josh Pressley led the way with his second home run of the year, finishing the day with three hits, three runs, and four RBI’s.

Jordan Pals (0-3) lasted only 3.2 innings for the Cardinals, the third time this series that a Cardinals starter did not make it through the fourth inning, allowing seven runs on eight hits. The struggles would continue as the bullpen allowed eight more runs over the next 3.1 innings. The only pitcher to not allow a run for the Cardinals was infielder Bo Robinson who entered the game in the eighth inning. Robinson retired all three batters he faced in only the second pitching appearance of his career.

The Wranglers took the early lead, scoring two runs in the second inning. With a runner on second, Mike Aviles hit his second home run in as many days to give Wichita the 2-0 lead.

The Cardinals would get on the board in the fourth as Brad Cresse ripped a two-out RBI double to right-center. Cresse’s first hit as a Springfield Cardinal scored Papo Bolivar all the way from first base to bring the Cards within one run.

The Wranglers would counter with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, all scoring with two outs. With one run already in, Pals allowed back-to-back walks to load the bases. A single by Pressley would drive in two more runs, chasing Pals from the game. Shane Wallace came on in relief and allowed three more runs before finally ending an inning that saw seven consecutive Wichita batters reach base.

Springfield would make some noise of their own, scoring five runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Milko Jaramillo singled to third base. After Shaun Boyd walked, Reid Gorecki would break a 0-9 streak by singling to left field to load the bases. After Tyler Minges’ force out drove in another run, Papo Bolivar followed with his second hit of the afternoon to score Boyd and end the day for Wranglers’ starter Thad Markray. With two on and two out, Travis Hanson would greet Trae McGill (1-1) with a three-run homer to right field to pull the Cards within two runs.

Wichita took over from there, scoring seven more runs over the next three innings. McGill settled down after the home run to Hanson, as he allowed only two hits over the next two innings to earn his first win of the season.

The Cardinals fall to 3-6 on the road and 6-8 overall. The Cardinals continue their 10-game road trip with a five-game series against the Tulsa Drillers tomorrow night. The first game will feature a pair of southpaws as the Cardinals will send Randy Leek (2-0) to the mound against the Drillers’ Keith Ramsey (0-2). Game time from Drillers Stadium is set for 7:05 p.m.

The Cards return to Hammons Field on Thursday, April 28th to face the Corpus Christi Hooks. Great seats are still available by calling the Springfield Cardinals ticket office at (417) 863-2143 or by visiting www.springfieldcardinals.com.
