Cardinals Saturday 7/19 Minor League News

Silas Bohannan

Activations, demotions, signings and All-Stars are in the Saturday news across the Cardinals system.

Rondon’s Return

On Friday, the Memphis Redbirds activated right-handed pitcher Jorge Rondon from the club’s temporarily inactive list, where he had been placed last Thursday, July 10.

The right-hander has a 3.13 ERA in 30 games with Memphis. Rondon has 27 strikeouts and 12 walks over 37 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old also threw one inning with St. Louis in three call-ups this season.

Blair Bumped

Right-handed pitcher Seth Blair’s initial Triple-A stint has ended. The former starter has been re-assigned to Double-A Springfield from Memphis, reversing a move made a month ago.

The control problems that have plagued the 25-year-old for years continued at Memphis, as Blair walked seven in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed eight runs, four earned, for a Redbirds ERA of 6.35.

Shaban Shipped Out

The Cardinals also decided reliever Ronnie Shaban might do better at his prior level, so the organization re-assigned the 24-year-old from Springfield to Palm Beach.

The right-hander spent all of 2013 in the Florida State League, where he was a post-season All-Star and moved up to the Texas League this year, his third in the system. In 24 games for Springfield, Shaban lugged a 7.66 ERA. Opposing hitters batted .356 against him, including four home runs.

Berg to Strengthen Springfield Pen

Released at his own request by the Los Angeles Angels organization on July 9, right-handed submariner Jeremy Berg has been signed by the Cardinals and assigned to Double-A Springfield. The 28-year-old had been with Triple-A Salt Lake, but wanted to move to another system where his chances of reaching the majors would be better, reports the Springfield News-Leader.

In 48 innings over 38 games with Salt Lake this season, Berg struck out 46 and walked just 14, but was battered around for a 7.50 ERA, including four long balls.

Barraclough Joins Reliever Shift

The Cardinals re-assigned a third reliever down a level. Kyle Barraclough has been dropped from Palm Beach to Peoria. The 24-year-old started the season with the Chiefs but was moved up to the Florida State League in May after posting a 1.23 ERA with Peoria.

Palm Beach was harsher for the right-hander, who logged a 5.30 ERA in 16 games. He struck out 18 but issued 11 free passes in 18 2/3 innings.

Another Free Agent Signee in Bohannan

Though the St. Louis Cardinals finished their signings from the 2014 draft with the addition of Bryan Dobzanski last week, the organization added yet another pitcher via free agency. Right-handed Silas Bohannan was signed on July 16 and assigned to the Gulf Coast League Cardinals.

The former College of the Ozarks and North Central Missouri Community College hurler is a big man at 6-foot-3, 245 pounds. The Neosho, Missouri native is said to throw 95-96 mph and can touch 98.

This season at C of O, Bohannan was a two-way player. On the mound, he posted a 7.20 ERA while fanning 33 but walking 28 in 33 1/3 innings.

The 21-year-old played his first two years at North Central, then committed to the University of Missouri, which later pulled their offer off the table. Bohannan was not taken in either the 2013 or 2014 drafts.

Cards Have Two DSL All-Stars

The Dominican Summer League Cardinals have two players on the National League squad in the annual DSL All-Star Game. Ironically, neither are Dominicans. The Cardinals honored are pitcher Derian Gonzalez, a Venezuelan, and outfielder Jonathan Rivera, who hails from Panama.

Gonzalez, a 19-year-old right-hander in his second professional season, has a 1.82 ERA over nine appearances, including seven starts. In 39 2/3 innings, he fanned 43 and walked 12.

Rivera, who just turned 17 in April and is seeing his first pro action, has a mid-season line of .280/.301/.414 in 157 at-bats over 38 DSL contests. The right-handed hitter has four home runs and 23 RBI.

The two 35-player teams representing all MLB organizations will face off at 10:00 A.M. Sunday at the Cleveland Indians’ complex. At the break, the DSL Cardinals are 15-27, in ninth place of 10 teams, 14 games out of first in the Boca Chica South Division.

Update: Lee Shelved

Palm Beach has placed reliever Thomas Lee on the seven-day disabled list. The right-handler last threw two innings on Thursday and has a 3.57 ERA on the season. The 24-year-old control artist fanned 40 and walked just four in 57 2/3 Florida State League innings this season.

Update: Nazario Returned

The Cardinals have returned reliever Iden Nazario to Palm Beach from Springfield. The left-hander performed well in his Double-A debut, allowing one run on two hits and a walk in four innings over three Texas League contests. The 25-year-old fanned five.

Nazario first moved up to Springfield on July 9.
