The St. Louis Cardinals' public stance regarding injured second baseman Kolten Wong, out with a sore shoulder, was that he would be re-evaluated following the current road trip.
Oddly, without notice from either St. Louis or the Memphis Redbirds, Wong appeared in the Triple-A club's lineup Tuesday night at Nashville. Wong walked, doubled and hit a three-run home run in his rehab debut. With his last outing with St. Louis having been on June 20, Wong should be eligible for activation off the 15-day disabled list this coming weekend.
Katz Starts Fast
Speaking of three RBI, that was also the output of new Palm Beach second baseman Mason Katz in his Florida State League debut Tuesday night. Katz, who was leading the Midwest League in home runs with 14, had his first with Palm Beach, a two-run shot.
His promotion was noted in Monday's version of this article.
R. Reyes Ahead
To replace Katz, the Peoria Chiefs received second baseman Robelys Reyes from State College. The Spikes had just activated fifth-rounder Darren Seferina, so could spare a second sacker.
In nine games, 43 at-bats with the Spikes, Reyes, 23, had a strong line of .349/.364/.395. The switch-hitter had a brief injury fill-in tryout with Peoria in early June, going 0-for-8 with a walk.
Also noted here Monday night was the news that Springfield shortstop Aledmys Diaz is again sidelined by his sore throwing shoulder. The Double-A Cards received a replacement from Palm Beach on Tuesday in Alex Mejia.
In the FSL, Mejia had a quietly successful year, with a line of .284/.307/.349. He drove in 29 and scored 30 in 71 games. One weakness is only nine walks in 275 at-bats.
