Springfield Good for Motte, Worry for Garcia

Two rehabbing St. Louis Cardinals pitchers threw for Springfield on Sunday, but one was injured.

Good news turned to worry on Sunday in Springfield, Missouri after left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia was forced to leave his first rehabilitation start early. The 27-year-old was struck on the inside of his left elbow while batting in the second inning of Sunday's Double-A game. While X-rays were negative, Garcia is returning to St. Louis to be checked out further.

Garcia allowed a two-run home run in the top of the second. Overall, he yielded three hits and a walk and struck out two in his two innings on the mound. Garcia, coming back from shoulder surgery last season and further discomfort this spring, had been scheduled to go 75 pitches but departed after throwing just 28.

Right-handed reliever Jason Motte also made his first Springfield appearance in his parallel rehab assignment. The former closer, coming back from May 2013 Tommy John surgery, fanned the side in a 1-2-3 eighth inning on Sunday.
