During Tuesday evening's St. Louis Cardinals game against Milwaukee, general manager John Mozeliak disclosed to the FOX Sports Midwest audience the next steps in the respective rehabs of left-handed starting pitcher Jaime Garcia and right-handed reliever Jason Motte.
The two will leave the Cardinals facility in Jupiter, Florida and join the Double-A Springfield Cardinals this weekend. Garcia is penciled in to start for the Texas League Cardinals on Sunday afternoon as they entertain the Tulsa Drillers (Colorado Rockies) at Hammons Field. Motte's debut has yet to be defined.
The two, who have been on the 15-day disabled list since the season began, have been throwing to Cardinals minor leaguers in extended spring training camp.
Motte, 31, underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery last May. Though Trevor Rosenthal seems to have a firm grip on his old job as closer, the relatively inexperienced Cardinals bullpen could surely benefit from the return of a healthy and productive Motte. The veteran will be eligible for free agency this fall.
Garcia, 27, also underwent season-ending surgery last May though his problem was with his shoulder. Additional discomfort this spring led to Garcia being shelved before he pitched in any Grapefruit League games. Joe Kelly won the competition to take over the lefty's rotation spot, though the right-hander is now on the DL himself.
As rehabbers, neither Garcia nor Motte will count against Springfield's 25-man roster limit. According to Major League Baseball rules, pitchers are allowed a maximum of 30 days rehab time.
