Cards' 25-man opening roster includes Kozma

Pete Kozma batted .200 this spring

Mark Ellis was placed on the disabled list, opening up a St. Louis roster spot for shortstop Pete Kozma.

On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced their 25-man Opening Day roster. The Cardinals begin their 2014 regular season on Monday, March 31 at 3:10 p.m. CDT when they meet the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park, with Adam Wainwright on the mound.

To get from their final 29 to the mandatory 25, the Cardinals purchased the contract of non-roster pitcher Pat Neshek and placed infielder Mark Ellis (left knee patella tendinitis) and pitchers Jaime Garcia (left shoulder) and Jason Motte (right elbow) on the 15-day disabled list. Ellis' move is retroactive to March 27 and the moves for both Garcia and Motte are retroactive to March 21.

Ellis' move was the only minor surprise, but he had aggravated his knee in one of the final spring games. The second baseman's inability to go means shortstop Pete Kozma will open the season on St. Louis' active roster. Neshek's addition to the 40-man roster brings the Cardinals' total to 39.

St. Louis' 25-man Opening Day roster is as follows:

PITCHERS (12): Keith Butler-RHP, Randy Choate-LHP, Joe Kelly-RHP, Lance Lynn-RHP, Seth Maness-RHP, Carlos Martinez-RHP, Shelby Miller-RHP, Pat Neshek-RHP, Trevor Rosenthal-RHP, Kevin Siegrist-LHP, Michael Wacha-RHP, Adam Wainwright-RHP;

CATCHERS (2): Tony Cruz, Yadier Molina;

INFIELDERS (6): Matt Adams, Matt Carpenter, Daniel Descalso, Pete Kozma, Jhonny Peralta, Kolten Wong;

OUTFIELDERS (5): Peter Bourjos, Allen Craig, Matt Holliday, Jon Jay, Shane Robinson;

15-DAY DISABLED LIST (3): Mark Ellis, Jaime Garcia, Jason Motte.
