Grichuk discusses his first spring camp

6 of his 9 spring hits went for extra bases

Before he was assigned to Triple-A Memphis on Monday, Cardinals outfield prospect Randal Grichuk talked about his new experiences.

Following Monday's game, the St. Louis Cardinals optioned outfielder Randal Grichuk to Triple-A Memphis.

Acquired from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in November along with Peter Bourjos in the David Freese trade, Grichuk was already on the Angels' 40-man roster and moved to St. Louis'. The 22-year-old Texan was placed into The Cardinal Nation top 40 prospect list for 2014 at number 10.

In his first spring camp with St. Louis, the right-handed hitter got off to a fast start. Grichuk logged a walk, a double and a triple in his first four games, but also in an indication of what was to come, fanned four times in his first 10 at-bats.

Overall in camp, Grichuk's line was .243/.310/.432. In 37 at-bats, he had nine hits, six of which went for extra bases (five doubles and a triple). Grichuk scored three runs, drove in three and drew three walks. He also struck out in just over 40 percent of his at-bats (15 of 37), indicating one area of continued emphasis.

Grichuk is expected to join fellow Cardinals top 10 prospects Oscar Taveras and Stephen Piscotty in an impressive starting outfield for Triple-A Memphis.

With this move, their third set in the last two days, the Cardinals have 28 40-man roster players and six non-roster invitees remaining in Major League Camp.
