At first blush, it might seem surprising that a player who spent the full season on the disabled list would be chosen to receive one of the most important awards a St. Louis Cardinal could earn.
Then again, it makes all the sense in the world that Jason Motte has been voted by his teammates to be the 2013 recipient of the Darryl Kile Award.
Perhaps missing the entire baseball season enabled the 31-year-old to increase his already-considerable charitable efforts. The Jason Motte Foundation and the formation of the Strike Out Cancer initiative has generated substantial funds to provide assistance to those directly and indirectly affected by cancers of all kinds.
Fans can show their support to the efforts by purchasing red reverse “K” Strike Out Cancer t-shirts and posters. $10 from the sale of each shirt goes directly to the Motte Foundation.
The Darryl Kile Award was first announced in January 2003 to memorialize the late pitcher and is voted upon annually by Cardinals players. Criteria include Kile’s qualities of being “a good teammate, a great friend, a fine father and a humble man.”
Kile took great pride in never missing a start in 331 major league outings and in never spending a day on the major league disabled list in 12 years. The right-handed pitcher passed away in his sleep due to coronary disease on June 22, 2002, leaving behind a wife, two small children, legions of fans and a grieving Cardinals organization.
Past winners include (no winner in 2002 to honor Kyle), Mike Matheny (2003), Woody Williams (2004), Cal Eldred (2005), Chris Carpenter (2006), Russ Springer (2007), Adam Wainwright (2008), Skip Schumaker (2009), Matt Holliday (2010), Lance Berkman (2011) and Jake Westbrook (2012).
The St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America will honor Motte at the 56th annual St. Louis BBWAA Dinner, to be held on January 19, 2014. Further information about the event can be found at the St. Louis BBWAA website.
