Arizona Fall League
A double, another double and a triple that plated the game-winning run—just another afternoon for Kris Bryant (.429/.468/.905) in the AFL. The slugging third baseman went 3-5 and scored three times in Mesa’s 7-5 win. The 2013 second overall pick leads the league in runs (16), doubles (6), homers (4), RBI (14), total bases (38), slugging (.905), and OPS (1.373).
DH Jorge Soler drilled his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the 8th that put the Solar Sox ahead 5-4. Soler also singled, walked, and has hit in all nine of his AFL games (.302/.318/.442).
Albert Almora (.333/.371/.606) went 0-4 with a walk batting leadoff and playing centerfield.
RHP Armando Rivero (0-1 7.50 ERA) had another tough outing allowing a run to score on a two-out triple and a wild pitch. Rivero threw 20 pitches, 12 for strikes.
Venezuelan Winter League
Wilson Contreras scored the winning run in Aragua’s 8-7 win over Margarita in 10 innings. Contreras entered the game in the bottom of the 10th after a walk, took second on another walk, and scored the winning run on a base hit from Ramon Castro. Frank Del Valle worked a third of an inning for Margarita allowing a hit and a walk but no runs. It was the left-hander’s second game.
Yoanner Negrin improved to 3-0 on the year as the right-hander earned the win in Caracas’ 5-4 win against Magallanes. Negrin allowed three earned runs in five innings on five hits and two walks. He fanned five and threw 83 pitches in the start. Cubs relief pitcher Hector Rondon earned his first hold, tossing a scoreless 8th, in his second appearance.
Dominican Winter League
OF Julio Borbon (.083) was 0-3 with a strikeout batting leadoff with a strikeout and was pinch-hit for in the 8th. Licey lost 4-1 to Aguilas.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Marcus Hatley recorded his third save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth in Culiacan’s 5-2 win over Mexicali. The right-hander retired the first two hitters of the inning, one on strikes, but allowed a walk before getting the final hitter to fly out to center. Hatley has worked in seven games with 10 punchouts in 6.2 innings and a ERA of 1.35.
Christian Villanueva (.273) pinch hit in the 10th in Obregon’s 3-2 loss to Mazatian in 11 innings. He popped up. Former Cub Jay Jackson, now with the Marlins, got the win in relief.
The Cubs have cut ties with two young pitchers, releasing RHP Ethan Elias and LHP Luis Villalba.
Elias, 20, was drafted in the 22nd round in 2011 out of Alberta, Canada, and spent the past two season in the Arizona Rookie League and Northwest League. In 2013 he pitched in six games for Boise (1-0 2.13) before being sent back to Mesa. He pitched in nine games in Arizona (2-1 5.71 ERA) with 17 K in 17.1 innings.
Villalba, 20, a 2009 International signing from Venezuela, spent the past four seasons in the Cubs lower levels making his stateside debut in 2011 but spent all of 2012 in the Dominican Summer League. He returned to Mesa this spring and appeared in 16 games in the Arizona Rookie League with a 1-2 record and a 2.52 ERA. The left-hander fanned 32 in 25 IP and walked seven with a 1.32 WHIP.
