Scottsdale 6 at Salt River 5

Manager Mike Shildt’s Salt River Rafters began their 2013 Arizona Fall League campaign began on a down note with a 6-5 loss to the visiting Scottsdale Scorpions.

The Diamondbacks’ Matt Stites took the loss, flipping a 5-3 ninth-inning advantage into a 6-5 deficit. Stites, the Rafters’ sixth hurler of the game, allowed three runs on four hits, a wild pitch and a balk in just 1/3 of an inning. Right-hander Merrill Kelly, from the Tampa Bay organization, entered the game with three runners already across, another on second and notched two strikeouts, one looking, to limit the damage.

Arizona’s Bo Schultz made the opening night start against Pirates’ top prospect Jameson Taillon. Schultz fanned six in 3 1/3 with two runs permitted on three hits and three walks. Southpaw James Pazos from the New York Yankees system, got the win with a scoreless eighth. None of St. Louis’ three relief pitching representatives took the mound.

In fact, Stephen Piscotty was the Cardinals’ sole representative in the line-up. The right fielder worked a base-on-balls to open the second and swiped consecutive bags, the latter triggering a throwing error by Scottsdale’s catcher that sent the Stanford product racing home for his team’s first score. Piscotty went hitless in three at bats, grounding out to first for the final out in the third, fanning swinging to begin the sixth and duplicating that with two aboard in the eighth.

Wednesday’s game: at Scottsdale (1-0), 6:35 pm MT, TB LHP Grayson Garvin (0-2, 1.59 ERA in 2013) at ATL RHP Aaron Northcraft (8-8, 3.42 ERA in 2013).
